In England, an iconic tree tied to the legend of Robin Hood is believed to have died. The old tree, known as the Major Oak, is believed to have stood for some 12 centuries. The tree has been a major tourist attraction and conservationists had worked to protect the 1,000-year-old oak, however this spring there were no new leaves on the tree. Scientists say years of human activity were compounded by factors including heat waves and drought and it was too much for the ancient tree to take. A U.K. charity that manages the land where the tree is says the giant tree will remain standing, “providing valuable decaying habitat” for the forest, their website said.
