Gary Announces Major Updates to Residential Recycling Program

In Gary, the city says major updates to its residential recycling program are in effect.  The changes follow a year-long review of recycling operations that included active engagement with local leaders, neighboring communities, industry professionals, and community groups. A new bi-weekly schedule began July 1, 2026, with collection every other week. The city also said to ensure the program remains sustainable and effective, compliance will be closely monitored. In addition, all existing recycling customers must confirm their intent to continue participating under the new guidelines by notifying the city of Gary’s Recycling Department no later than July 31, 2026.
