Cornell Lab’s BirdCast says large numbers of birds are expected to be on the move over northwest Indiana tonight Thursday September 10 2026. They issued a Migration Alert for several area cities and towns for tonight, urging residents to turn off unnecessary outdoor lights from 11 pm to 6am local time to help protect the birds on their fall journey. The BirdCast website says most migrating birds travel at night, and bright lights can disorient nocturnally migrating birds, potentially causing fatal collisions with buildings and other hazards. The map says an estimated over 19,700,000 birds crossed Indiana last night (Wed Sep 9) – with a peak migration traffic total of over 30,000,000 birds estimated to have been in flight across the Hoosier state overnight Wednesday night, as not all of them may fully cross an area in one night.
