In northwest Indiana, Purdue Extension says Lake County residents can take a practical step toward understanding potential lead risks at home thanks to free lead screening kits available at participating local libraries. Participants collect soil, water and dust for analysis and receive results, practical guidance, and local resources. Researchers at IU Indianapolis will analyze the samples and send results directly to residents, along with tips for reducing lead exposure and a list of helpful resources. The project team can help residents understand the reports and consider next steps. The kit and return shipping are free. Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is October 25-31.
Lake County residents can pick up a kit at the front desk of these libraries: East Chicago Public Library; Gary Public Library-Kennedy Branch; Hammond Public Library; IU Northwest Anderson Library; Lake County Public Library-Cedar Lake Branch, Dyer-Schererville Branch, Griffith-Calumet Township Branch, Highland Branch, Hobart Branch, Lake Station-New Chicago Branch, Merrillville Branch, Munster Branch, and St. John Branch, Lowell Public Library-Lowell Branch, Schneider Branch, and Shelby Branch; Whiting Public Library.
Kits are also available at the offices of Purdue Extension and Lake County Soil and Water, 2291 N. Main St., Crown Point.
By collecting and sharing samples of soil, dust, and water, participants will help researchers learn more about how lead moves between indoor and outdoor environments. Community participation is essential to the success of this research; however, residents may opt out at any time, a news release said.
“Thinking that lead might be in or around our homes can feel overwhelming,” said Julie Duttlinger, Administrator, Lake County Soil & Water Conservation District. “This is an excellent opportunity for all residents in Lake County to get their home screened both inside and out for lead.”
The project is made possible by Lake County Soil & Water Conservation District, Purdue Extension, IU Northwest, and IU Indianapolis.
