Subaru says its first model made in the United States, assembled in northern Indiana, has been discontinued after 36 years. A news release said Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette has produced the final Subaru Legacy. The sedan, a Limited in Magnetite Gray, was driven off the assembly line this past Friday September 12, 2025. The company said the decision reflects market shifts from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers, along with Subaru’s transition to electrified and fully electric vehicles. The first-generation model began a new era for Subaru with a competitive mid-sized sedan and wagon, the company said; the Legacy Wagon eventually became the foundation for the Subaru Outback. The Indiana plant, Subaru’s only manufacturing facility outside of Japan, currently assembles the Ascent, Crosstrek and Outback models, and produces about half of all Subaru vehicles sold in North America, the company said.
