Company officials say the U.S. Steel board has approved a proposal to invest about $200 million to improve the Gary Works hot strip mill to optimize production costs and expand premium product offerings, including heavy gauge line pipe and automotive steel, a news release said. Gary Works is U.S. Steel’s largest manufacturing plant. The steel company also said it is moving forward on a $100 million project to build a new slag recycler at a Pittsburgh-area plant. In a news release, U.S. Steel also said a slag recycler “helps give new life to the byproducts of steelmaking”, like providing ingredients for cement and is an opportunity to reduce air emissions and waste. The investments at Gary and Pennsylvania are part of Nippon Steel’s $11 billion commitment to U.S. Steel, officials said.
