In St. Joseph County near the La Porte County line, the South Shore Line says it will host a multi-team emergency preparedness drill on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, in New Carlisle. The federally mandated drill is scheduled to run from about 5 to 7 pm Central time/6pm-8pm Eastern and will cause scheduled train service to reduce speeds while moving through the drill area the commuter line said. In a service advisory, the commuter rail also said passengers may notice multiple emergency vehicles and personnel in the area of the drill, including local police, fire, EMS, and others. “The drill is to be located on the SSL mainline Track 2 that runs between Smilax Road and Tulip Road. Flaggers will be present to maintain the safety of all drill participants and the motoring public, ” the South Shore Line said. Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) said the crisis scenario for the drill will be performed in conjunction with several agencies and organizations including the Federal Railroad Administration.
