The National Weather Service Chicago says weekend storms produced six tornadoes in its forecast area across Iroquois, Livingston, and Ford counties, ranging in intensity from EF-0 to EF-1, and one rated as unknown. Meteorologists also said there were a few areas of mostly minor flooding especially “within a narrow corridor” in northwest Indiana where two to four inch rainfall totals were seen. The weather service says December tornadoes are very rare for the Chicago area, with only five ever recorded since 1950 prior to Sunday December 28, 2025, the most recent of those being an EF-0 tornado that occurred in northwest Indiana, in Lake County, near the Cedar Lake-Crown Point area, in December 2021. “In the state of Illinois, a total of 9 tornadoes were confirmed during this event. Three additional tornadoes were confirmed in the state of Indiana, bringing the regional total for this event to 12,” an event summary at the Chicago National Weather Service website said.
