In Gary, a Traffic Signal Initiative begins this spring that’s an expansion of the Relight the City program. The city says the effort is supported by more than $2 million in funding and cost savings generated through the city’s transition to LED streetlighting. Over 1,000 fixtures have been converted to LED, and over 300 existing LED fixtures and poles have been repaired, a news release said. Officials say the Gary Common Council approved $3.4 million in ARPA funding that launched the Relight the City Initiative, and by leveraging reduced energy consumption, the city is able to address long-standing traffic signal outages and improve roadway safety citywide. Work on traffic signals begins at high traffic area intersections along key corridors then move across the city. It won’t include traffic lights on state roads like Broadway/State Road 53, for instance, as they are maintained by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). “Our focus remains on modernizing Gary’s infrastructure and keeping our residents and visitors safe,” said Gary Mayor Eddie Melton. “By restoring traffic signals and completing streetlight upgrades by the end of 2026, we are delivering tangible improvements that the community can see and rely on.”
