In Hammond, Mayor Thomas McDermott, Jr. and the city invite the public to the groundbreaking for the new downtown Hammond train station on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 1 PM. It’s one of the Hammond stops along the new Monon Corridor that extends the South Shore Commuter Line south to Munster/Dyer. The city says the downtown station was designed by Alexander Gorlin Architects from New York City, in collaboration with city planners Speck Dempsey led by Jeff Speck, who designed Hammond’s downtown walkable city plan. The event will take place near the corner of Russell Street and Oakley Avenue east of the rail line. There will be on-street parking available on both Fayette and Oakley. “The station will connect current and future downtown residents to a more accessible and convenient transit option. It represents another important step in the city’s ongoing effort to make Downtown Hammond a truly walkable city,” the city said in a news release.
