Strong non-thunderstorm winds impacted northwest Indiana for a couple of hours early Monday afternoon April 27, 2026, resulting in numerous reports of tree damage, downed trees, and downed power lines and utility poles. The National Weather Service Chicago says “a powerful wake low” that traveled across the Great Lakes resulted in wind damage in its forecast area, including communities across the Region. At News Audio on Demand under the News dropdown menu at the home page of our website, Region News Team Meteorologist Matt Wintz explains what a wake low is and how these strong winds, with gusts of over 50 and 60 mph, developed.
