In northern Indiana’s Marshall County, Friday June 5, 2026, will be a big day for a small town when Union Pacific’s Big Boy Number 4014 steam locomotive pulls in for a 30-minute whistle stop in the Town of Argos. The town earlier said based on “the buzz already surrounding this” they’re anticipating visitors from well beyond the area. Union Pacific Railroad says its famed Big Boy, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is heading to the East Coast as part of a historic coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary – and the journey includes stops for the first time in Indiana. Another whistle stop is scheduled July 16, 2026, in Knox. The rail company said the eastern leg of the tour will operate across the Norfolk Southern network, marking a historic collaboration between the two railroads and started May 25th from Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Here is a link to the full schedule (subject to change) and updates – and here is a link for more details about the tour – at the Union Pacific website. Region rail fans can also visit up.com/heritage/steam/track for information on No. 4014’s location.
