The Munster Civic Foundation says it is transforming an often-overlooked piece of everyday infrastructure into a town-wide gallery through its new initiative, Electrifying Munster –
Beauty & the Box. The multi-year program will bring original, locally designed artwork to the 32 electrical utility boxes owned by the town, most of which sit at signalized intersections throughout the community. Currently twelve boxes have been secured throughout Munster.
Under the program, Munster residents, local businesses, and Munster-based civic and nonprofit organizations can sponsor an available utility box and work with a graphic artist to design original
artwork, which is then applied as a vinyl wrap. Each sponsorship covers the design, production and installation of the artwork, and sponsors retain their box for a two-year period. Boxes are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and sponsors may reserve their preferred location with a 50% deposit.
Sponsorship costs range from $2,000 to $2,500 per box, and the Foundation is also inviting local graphic artists to submit original designs for consideration through a Call for Artists RFP.

The Beauty & the Box program is the latest project from the Munster Civic Foundation, a nonprofit organization created in 1990 through an endowment from the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, parent organization of Powers Health (formerly Community Hospital). In addition to Beauty & the Box, the Foundation sponsors the July 3rd fireworks, Summer Concerts at
Centennial Park, the Munster Monarch Festival, and “Light the Night” holiday decorations, and has previously contributed to the Veterans’ Memorial, the Munster Community Pool, the Tiptoe Thru Town tulip sculptures, town murals, and the community’s first bike paths.
