In Porter County, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will host a public hearing regarding a proposed intersection project at State Road 49 and County Road 950 North/Calumet Avenue. Officials say the need is based on the high crash rate. As proposed, the project involves the construction of a Modified Reduced Conflict Intersection with a Median U-Turn to improve safety. INDOT says a Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI) eliminates the cross-over between a four-lane divided highway.
The hearing will take place at Chesterton Town Hall Wednesday September 2, 2026, doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to allow the public to view displays and talk with the project team, followed by a presentation at 6 p.m. and public comment session afterwards.
INDOT is offering livestreams of all public meetings and hearings. Visit bit.ly/SR49CalumetAveCR950Livestream to participate in the livestream. Livestream audience comments will only be accepted in written electronic form, not verbally, INDOT said. A recording of the livestream presentation will be posted on the project webpage and INDOT YouTube page after the hearing and will be available for at least 90 days, a news release said.
