The Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County says as of Monday March 18, 2024, it has reopened its Boone Grove and Portage compost sites for the season, 8 am to 4 pm. The Valparaiso compost site, which is open year-round, has extended operating hours of 8 am to 5 pm. At the three public sites across Porter County, residents can bring branches, brush, and leaves from their yards and pick up compost and mulch for their gardens. The sites also offer a variety of other drop-off services including electronics recycling. The Valparaiso and Portage sites offer containers for drop off recycling, plastic bag recycling, smoke detectors and electronics recycling. The Boone Grove site provides smoke detector, electronics and battery recycling. The District says please note, items that contain Freon, such as air conditioners and refrigerators, are NOT accepted.
